Sister Callista Roy, best known for her theory development of the Adaptation Model of Nursing, has dedicated her life to the research and study of nursing intervention and theory. Born in 1939 in Los Angeles, California, she became a member of the Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet and received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Mount Saint Mary’s College in Los Angeles in 1963. She later received a Master’s in pediatric nursing in 1966 from the University of California as well as a Master’s and PhD in sociology in 1973 and 1977.
While working as a pediatric nurse, Sr. Callista Roy observed the resiliency of children and noted their ability to adapt to physical and psychological changes they were experiencing. It was with this observation and nursing experience that Roy developed the Adaptation Model, which later became the philosophical foundation model used at Mount Saint Mary’s, her alma mater.
Continued work in nursing including research in neuroscience earned Sr. Callista Roy recognition as an honorary of the World's Who's Who of Women in 1979 and as a Living Legend in 2007 by the American Academy of Nursing. She also received the Outstanding Alumna award and Carondelet Medal from Mount Saint Mary's along with numerous honorary doctorates from Alverno College, Eastern Michigan University, and St. Joseph's College.
Today, Sister Callista Roy, PhD, RN, FAAN, is a resident nurse theorist at Boston College, William F. Connell School of Nursing.
